TM-62P2 Antitank Mine

The TM-62P2 mine is an antitank track-breaking mine. It is designed to disable enemy tracked and wheeled vehicles. Enemy vehicles are engaged by damaging their running gear when the mine charge detonates at the moment a wheel or road wheel runs over the mine fuze.

The mine may be emplaced on the ground or in the ground, in snow, or under water, either manually or by mechanical means (PMZ-4P, GMZ-3). It is intended primarily for emplacement by mechanical means; therefore, the carrying handle is a removable harness-type handle made of strong green nylon webbing. The mine diameter is 2 cm smaller than that of the TM-62P and is equal to the diameter of the TM-62M mine.

The TM-62P2 mine is best suited for emplacement by mechanical means in minefields that are difficult to detect with metal detectors.

The mine’s service life in combat is unlimited. It is not fitted with a self-destructor. It has no anti-lift devices, but booby-trap mines may be used with it for this purpose.

The design of the TM-62P2 mine, like that of all other mines of the TM-62 family, is very simple. It is a container filled with explosive, into which a plastic cup with an internal thread and containing a booster detonator is installed. The thread dimensions are identical for all mines of the TM-62 series, which permits the use of any MV-62 series fuze in any TM-62 series mine.

The mine casing is made of impact-resistant plastic in a not finally assembled configuration (without fuzes). Mines in containers secured in crates may be airdropped from an aircraft without a parachute (aircraft flight altitude not more than 15-20 meters, speed up to 290 km/h).

The mine itself has no target sensor in the form of a pressure cover. The target sensor is only the fuze area. When a track or wheel runs over it, the fuze breaks along the weakened section in the threaded area and, under the load, moves downward, causing it to function.

The TM-62P mine, like all other mines of this series, may be used as a demolition charge. To use it as a demolition charge, the DU-62 detonating device is screwed into the fuze well instead of the fuze; in essence, it is similar to a blanking plug, with an EDP-r electric detonator installed in its center.

Use of the mine with the DU-62 is especially convenient when blasting ice, since the mine is sealed and can be conveniently suspended in a hole under the ice.

A mine fitted with the MVP-62 fuze has increased resistance to the explosive shock wave (not less than 3.5 kg/cm²). Thus, the mine does not detonate at a distance greater than 4 meters from a UZ-Z type mine-clearing charge. At a distance of 1-4 meters, up to 50% of the mines remain serviceable.

After the minefield has been emplaced, the safety pins are buried in the ground near one of the outermost mines, and an entry to this effect is made in the minefield record.

It is prohibited to render safe mines:

- Emplaced in an improper position.

- Having damage (cracks along the weakened section) or holes in the fuze.

- That have been subjected to the effects of an explosion or artillery fire and are located within 2 meters of the edge of the explosion crater.

These mines are destroyed in place by the detonation of placed explosive charges weighing not less than 0.4 kg.

It is permissible to drag damaged mines and mines set in a non-removable condition with a grapnel from a safe distance or from cover, followed by destruction by detonation of placed charges.
