The PTM-4 mine consists of an elongated steel semi-cylindrical body and includes: an influence fuze with a magnetic target sensor, a pyrotechnic delay ring, a firing-and-detonating mechanism, a programmable electronic self-destruct device; an explosive charge with a gel-like shaped-charge liner and an initiation device, and contains an orientation device for flight and ground positioning in the form of a spring-loaded fabric cover.

When fired from a canister, module, aerial dispenser unit or RBK, the warhead of a rocket, or other carriers, the pyrotechnic delay ring is ignited and the mechanical safety stage is removed, the orientation device deploys, and the mine is stabilized in flight with the semi-cylindrical surface facing toward the ground. After landing flat or ricocheting, the mine positions itself on the ground with the shaped-charge liner oriented toward the upper hemisphere, after which the orientation device cover is ejected and the fuze switches to the armed position.

When a tank drives over the mine, the magnetic sensor and the firing-and-detonating mechanism of the fuze are actuated; the shaped-charge liner collapses, forming a powerful shaped-charge jet that penetrates the tank’s underside and damages its internal assemblies and crew. When a tank runs over the mine with its track, the track is severed by the brisant effect of the explosion of the elongated explosive charge. In the absence of a target, the mine self-destructs after the preset time has elapsed.
The mine fuze also reacts to a person approaching the mine if the person is carrying metal objects with a mass exceeding 50–100 grams, in which case it becomes antipersonnel. In the armed position, the mine cannot be rendered safe.
Coloration
As a rule, the mine is painted dark green or olive green.
Marking
Applied to the body in black letters with paint and includes:
PTM-4 - mine designation.
B-01-07 - manufacturer’s plant code - batch number - year of manufacture.
TG-40 - filling code.
