MS-5 Booby-Trap Mine

The MS-5 mine is intended to engage personnel. It may be used as a detonator for initiating explosive charges. In appearance, the MS-5 mine resembles a cigarette case bearing an image of a chess piece—a knight on a chessboard—which serves as the mine casing.

The case opens and closes by means of a spring latch with a button. Inside the case is the mine body with a delayed-action detonator and charge. The mine charge consists of one tetryl block and two TNT blocks. A metal element is installed in the upper part of the end face of the body.

The mine can be set to function:

1. When the case is opened—in this mode, when the lid of the “cigarette case” is opened, the striker pierces the MG-8-T detonator cap, which instantly detonates the explosive charge;

2. When the mine is lifted from its place of emplacement—in this mode, the metal element functions, imparting an impulse to initiate the detonator, which instantly detonates the explosive charge;

3. When a load (an object weighing not less than 0.3 kg) is removed from the mine—in this mode, the metal element functions, imparting an impulse to initiate the detonator, which instantly detonates the explosive charge;

4. Upon expiration of the delay time in the “object” position—in this mode, the detonator will function with a delay from 15 minutes (at 40 °C) to 360 hours (at -20 °C).

When the mine is used as a detonator for initiating an explosive charge, the MS-5 mine must fit tightly against the surface of the explosive charge. Upon functioning, the mine charge ensures transmission of detonation from the TNT blocks through a wooden wall up to 20 mm thick.

Emplaced MS-5 mines are not to be rendered safe.

Coloration

The mine casing is unpainted steel with an image of an iridescent chessboard and a black chess knight.
