Injury to a person (or several persons simultaneously) upon detonation of the mine is inflicted by preformed fragments (balls or rollers), which are projected toward the enemy within a 54° horizontal sector to a range of up to 90-99 meters. The height of the casualty sector is from 30 cm to 8 meters at maximum range. Detonation is initiated by the operator using a control panel when the enemy appears within the casualty sector, or if a soldier actuates the breakwire sensor of the MVE-72 or MVE-NS detonator.
The mine itself is not supplied with detonators, but has two threaded sockets in the upper part for the MD-5M fuze and the EDP-R electric detonator. Thus, the mine can be initiated by one of two methods.
The effectiveness of the mine depends greatly on how accurately it is aimed. Therefore, the upper part of the mine is equipped with a sight, the field of view of which indicates the casualty zone to the combat engineer.
The mine is emplaced manually on the ground or attached to vertical surfaces (posts, trees), using the steel pin located on the lower surface of the mine, which can be rotated horizontally and vertically by means of a hinge, covering the lower 180° hemisphere.

For precise aiming of the mine and determination of the casualty sector, the mine has a sight in the upper part of the casing.
The mine may also be used with the MVE-72 or MVE-NS detonator, which has a target sensor in the form of a low-visibility thin breakwire, with an actuation force of 0.3 kg. In this case, the mine’s combat service life is limited by the service life of the power battery (MVE-72 - up to 4 months; MVE-NS - 25-90 days). Other uses of the mine are also possible when other detonators are employed (as an object mine or a booby-trap mine). The mines may be included in the NVU-P command-operated anti-personnel minefield kit.
The mine’s combat service life is not limited. It has no self-destruction, anti-removal, or anti-neutralization elements.
During detonation of the mine, the fragments disperse mainly in the direction of aiming.
The safe distance from the mine to the rear and to the sides is specified as 100 meters; however, combat practice shows that already at a distance of 12-15 meters there is no need to fear casing fragments flying to the rear and to the sides.
Coloring
Green or brown.
Marking
Standard double marking, applied in black paint on the rear wall and containing:
- МОН-90 - mine code.
- Б-20-82 - manufacturer plant code - lot number - year of manufacture.
- ПВВ-5Л - filling code.
