Non-Contact Firing Device NVU-P2 “Okhota-2”

The NVU-P2 device is a non-contact, seismic-action device intended for detecting enemy personnel and controlling the detonation of one or a group of up to 4 antipersonnel mines.

This is the latest development of the Russian Federation, intended to replace the Soviet NVU-P. It has an additional circuit in the device that causes all mines to detonate if any electrical cable (mine or sensor cable) is cut or if an attempt is made to open the device cover. Thus, approaching the NVU-P2 by vehicle and attempting to neutralize the device from the vehicle is impractical, which was not excluded for the NVU-P. It also has a built-in electronic timer that switches the device to a safe position every 24 hours for a preset period of time (up to three times per day), allowing safe movement through the minefield during these intervals. This makes it possible to maintain lanes in the minefield and to emplace new mines in place of those that have functioned.

It is used with all antipersonnel mines employed with the NVU-P, but the POB mine is already the standard munition. It provides sequential detonation of munitions in autonomous mode, as well as selective or group detonation by means of the control unit.

Device kit:

- NVU-P2 device - 1 pc.;

- ShI-01 control unit - 1 pc.;

- reel with a 100 m section of control line - 4 pcs.;

- radio link cable - 1 pc.;

- stab initiating device - 24 pcs.;

- lithium cell LT 26500 S10 (TL-5.5) 102.000.000TU - 2 pcs.;

- actuation simulator - 1 pc. (Required to determine directly in the field the distance at which engineer munitions will function);

- entrenching tool.

The PP-O1 control unit consists of a switch that allows the non-contact explosive device to be set to two modes: either controlled or autonomous. The control unit has a “Запрос” button, which can be used to obtain information on the status of the minefield (light signals indicate in which mode the field is set: controlled or autonomous, and sequential flashing of the lamps indicates the number of connected munitions that have not yet functioned). The “Пуск” button enables detonation of from 1 to 4 munitions, or simultaneous detonation of all 4 munitions if the switch is set to position “Г”.

The maximum length of the control line (operator distance from the emplaced munitions) is 400 meters (4 reels of 100 m each, with special plugs by means of which the line can be extended). Thus, either 1 munition can be emplaced at 400 m, or 4 munitions at a distance of 100 m from the operator. Control via an encrypted radio link through the PD-440 device is also possible. In controlled mode, when a light signal appears (the “Цель” lamp lights up), accompanied by an audible signal, the operator detonates the appropriate munition by pressing the “Пуск” button and selecting the corresponding munition.

In autonomous mode, if a target does not appear within the NVU-P2 operating radius during the preset time (7, 14, 28 days), the munitions self-detonate, and the control unit becomes unserviceable. The control unit becomes unserviceable in 3 cases:

1) After all 4 munitions have been expended.

2) After expiration of the self-destruction time in autonomous mode.

3) After discharge of the power source. In this case: the firing capacitor is discharged, the relay operates, the circuit switches over, and the self-deactivation mechanism in the detonator is actuated (the electrical circuit burns out).

The interval between detonation of the 1st and 2nd munitions is 5 seconds (time required to charge the firing capacitor).

The device reacts to a walking, running, or crawling individual, and to groups of up to 10 people. The device detection radius is up to 20 meters.

The device does not function and remains serviceable:

- when motor vehicles pass at distances greater than 30 m,

- when helicopters fly over at an altitude greater than 50 m,

- under small-arms fire conditions,

- during the explosion of an explosive charge with a mass of up to 5 kg at distances greater than 20 m,

- when tracked vehicles pass at distances greater than 50 m.

The device provides:

- repeated switching, by means of the control unit, to the safe state and back;

- repeated switching, by means of the control unit, to the combat state from autonomous mode to controlled mode and back;

- sequential detonation of up to four munitions in autonomous mode;

- selective detonation and simultaneous detonation of four munitions in controlled mode;

- discrete setting, by the control unit, of the munition self-destruction time in autonomous mode for a period of 7, 14, or 28 days;

- monitoring of the device status and modes;

Light indication on the control unit:

- device status: combat, safe;

- device operating mode: autonomous, controlled;

- receipt of a command to detonate munitions in autonomous mode;

- appearance of a target in the detection zone in controlled mode;

- integrity of the control line;

- audible and light indication when a target appears in the detection zone.
