When the mine is set to position “1” (Transport), the mine detonates upon expiration of the preset delay time (from 1 to 120 hours).

When the mine is set to position “2” (Object), the arming delay mechanism begins to operate. Upon expiration of the arming delay time (15 minutes +- 2 minutes), the mine’s firing circuits (anti-removal and anti-neutralization circuits and the actuating device) are connected to the power source and the mine detonates.

When the mine is set to position “3” (Booby trap), it functions upon an attempt to move it or tilt it by 7-190.

The mine is emplaced underwater in a sealed case.

On ferromagnetic objects, the MZD-21 mine is installed with a magnet on a bracket.
