YM-1 Anti-Personnel Mine

The YM-1 mine is a pressure-operated anti-personnel blast mine. Injury is inflicted on a person by destroying the lower part of the leg (foot) or severing the leg when the mine charge detonates at the moment the foot steps on the target sensor.

This is the Italian TS-50 anti-personnel blast mine, manufactured in Iran under the name YM-1.

These mines, procured by the Syrian Ministry of Defense, began to be supplied to the so-called DPR and LPR via the Russian Federation in November 2017. Deliveries are made on a regular basis.

The mine is designed for mechanized scatter emplacement on the surface of the ground, including by helicopter, but mechanized emplacement equipment is not supplied from Syria. It can be emplaced manually either on the surface of the ground or below the surface (concealment layer up to 3 cm). The mine’s hermetic sealing allows it to be used in water-saturated and marshy soils. The mine, made of impact-resistant plastic, is fairly resistant to impacts and blast-wave effects.

The mine is not equipped with a self-destructor. It has no anti-lift devices, but its design features preclude a mechanism for returning the mine from the armed to the safe position.

The virtually complete absence of metal parts entirely precludes detection of the mine by induction metal detectors, while the sealing of the mine reduces the odor of the explosive, making detection by dogs more difficult. The high sensitivity of the target sensor makes searching for these mines with probes impossible.
