The mine is emplaced manually in the ground, and when emplacement in the ground is not possible, on the ground (in this case the mine is tied to a stake driven into the ground). The mine may also be emplaced by securing it to various local objects.

The mine is not fitted with a self-destruct mechanism. It has no anti-lift or anti-neutralization devices; however, the very high sensitivity of the MUV fuze (if it is used) makes neutralization of the mine impossible.
Combustion of the sound unit charges is accompanied by a strong, sharp whistle audible at a distance of up to 500 meters. The charges burn for 8-10 seconds.
As a rule, the stars in one mine are of the same color (white, green, or red). Their color is indicated by the coloring of the lower end of the mine. However, mines loaded with stars of different colors in various combinations are also encountered.
For 10-12 seconds, while the stars are ejected from the mine, the area is illuminated within a radius of up to 50-70 meters.
During the wars in Afghanistan and in the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, SM mines were widely used at checkpoints and troop deployment areas as warning and security devices. Currently, in the Russian Federation, special fuzes have been developed for the mine, featuring combined seismic and infrared sensors. These fuzes prevent approach to the mine for its neutralization and make undetected movement within its area of effect impossible.
Coloring
Green.
Marking
Green, protective. The lower end is painted in the color of the stars installed in the mine: white, green, or red.
- SM - mine code designation.
- 320-1-82 - manufacturer plant code - lot number - year of manufacture.
