Antipersonnel Mines POM-2R, POM-2R1, POM-2RBS, POM-2R1BS

The POM-2R series mine is an omnidirectional fragmentation antipersonnel mine. It is intended to incapacitate enemy personnel. One or several persons are affected by fragments of the casing when the mine charge detonates at the moment a person snags one of the four target sensors (thin nylon threads, each 9.5 m long).

The POM-2R series mines are almost a complete analogue of the POM-2 mine and differ only in that they are not emplaced in groups of 4 using mechanized mine-laying means from the KPOM-2 cassette, but individually by hand using the URP device, into which the mine is inserted before use. The mine can be emplaced only on the ground and only manually. Emplacement of the mines by mechanized means is not provided for. Also, unlike the POM-2 mine, the design of the POM-2R mine does not include a stabilizer unit intended to stabilize the POM-2 mine in flight when emplaced by remote mining means.

The POM-2R mine series includes the following mines:

- POM-2R (arming time 120 seconds, self-destruction time 4-100 hours);

- POM-2R1 (arming time 50 seconds, self-destruction time 4-100 hours);

- POM-2RBS (arming time 120 seconds, no self-destructor);

- POM-2R1BS (arming time 50 seconds, no self-destructor).

The URP device is intended for manual emplacement of POM-2R series mines and ensures initiation of the mine’s delayed arming mechanism and transition to the armed state.

When preparing the mine for use, the mine in the sub-cassette is inserted into the URP with the B-179 thermal sensor facing downward. Then the red union nut is unscrewed from the URP and the nylon pull cord is extended. After that, the mine is emplaced on the terrain. By sharply pulling the union nut with the nylon cord, the mine is armed. After the delayed arming time has elapsed, the mine is ejected from the sub-cassette. The mine is set on spring-loaded legs in an oriented position (close to vertical) on the terrain, and the target sensor anchors are scattered to the sides up to 9.5 meters, manually unwinding the target sensor threads. After that, the mine transitions to the armed state.

When the target sensor thread is acted upon and a force of 0.3 kgf or more is applied by the thread to the detonator, the safety-and-firing mechanism is actuated, ensuring detonation of the mine.

If the mine has not assumed the correct position after emplacement, for example due to falling into deep snow or swamp, or if the target sensors could not assume the correct position (did not fully deploy, or not all deployed, or not to the full distance), the mine nevertheless operates in the normal combat mode.

Only the POM-2R and POM-2R1 mines have a self-destruction device, which ensures self-destruction of the mine by detonation after 4-100 hours (on average, at a temperature of 20 degrees, 23 hours) from the moment of emplacement (the self-destruction time depends on the ambient air temperature). The mine is not subject to disarming.
