OZM-160 Anti-Personnel Mine

The OZM-160 mine is a command-detonated bounding anti-personnel fragmentation mine with all-round effect. It is designed to incapacitate enemy personnel. A person (or several persons simultaneously) is struck by fragments of the casing of the projectile that bounds from the mine barrel when it detonates at a height of up to 1.5 meters above the surface.

The mine is initiated when an electrical impulse is sent from the control panel to the electric igniter of the powder propelling charge. The burst power of the projectile and the casualty-producing effect of the fragments are approximately equal to those of a 160 mm mortar fragmentation round or a 152 mm high-explosive fragmentation shell.

The mine is emplaced manually in the ground, and if emplacement in the ground is not possible, on the ground surface. In this case, the mine is secured to a sufficiently strong object (a post, tree, anti-tank obstacle, rail embedded in the ground, etc.). However, the excessive weight, the long time required for emplacement, the need to dig a deep shaft (up to 1.3 meters), and the impossibility of using the mine in a non-command-detonated mode significantly limit its employment. Since the mine is completely sealed and the ejectable bursting projectile is located inside the barrel and does not come into contact with the soil, the mine may be emplaced both in heavily waterlogged (marshy) soil and, conversely, in frozen ground. The mine’s service life in combat condition is not limited. The mine is not fitted with a self-destructor. It has no anti-lift or anti-disarming devices.

Before emplacement of the mine, the cover is removed, and the built-in 2.5-meter electric cable is passed through the opening in the wall of the base plate and led out of the borehole in which the mine is emplaced. This cable is connected to a 100-meter electric firing circuit. OZM-160 mines are used only in a command-detonated configuration and are intended for the creation of pre-emplaced command-detonated anti-personnel minefields, usually in a fortified area. The sealed barrel of the mine ensures long-term storage of the mine in the ground in a combat-ready condition (up to 20 years).
